Norwood served as construction manager for a 196,000 square foot LEED Gold certified headquarters and food-grade production facility on behalf of Mars Drinks, a global beverage company. The project involved the expansion of its manufacturing operations, the addition of coffee roasting capabilities, an office expansion to serve as Mars Drinks’ headquarters, the consolidation of warehouse space through high-density racking systems, a full scale façade and roof replacement, and a complete replacement of electrical switchgear.
To help achieve Mars’ sustainability goals, Norwood constructed an in-ground cistern designed to capture and recycle rain water. The team also installed electro-chromatic windows that gradually become more tinted as the sun intensifies to reduce heat gain and realize energy savings.
Norwood completed all work while Mars employees occupied the space and production remained fully functional – typically a 24/7 operation. By implementing a detailed phasing plan, Norwood was able to minimize any disruption to ongoing operations and ensure a safe and efficient working environment.
The project received 2 awards from the Associated Builders and Contractors, Eastern PA Chapter – Excellence in Construction Award and Best Green Build.
